Poor kid.

My 11 year old is having a rough time.  She got her ears pierced just before Christmas.  Like many young girls, she had to psych herself up for it.  It was really cute seeing how excited she was to get it done.  She waited very patiently for the six weeks until she could change out the studs… and she’s had nothing but trouble since then.

I have no idea why, but she keeps getting infection after infection in her ear.  She’s very good about cleaning them morning and night. All the earrings are new.  She’s a clean kid.  I don’t get it.  Last night she took her earrings out and one was bleeding a bit AGAIN.  She’s so frustrated.  I don’t know what she should be doing differently.

I remember when I had my ear pierced in college and it used to close all the time.  I stopped wearing it when I turned 30 (and Jesse shamed me into taking it out).  It closed over within a week.  Maybe it’s hereditary. :)

Your daughter might be like I was when I was a teenager, I discovered that I was allergic to most of the metal used in cheap earrings. She needs to try surgical steel or gold. It allowed me to wear earrings.

Later in life though, it changed, and now I can wear anything.

Also, maybe she just needs more time for them to heal. Put the studs back in for another couple weeks or a month.

    Shotgun,
A suggestion for your daughter…maybe she should find some studs she likes and leave them in for awhile. Clean them with the acohol (sp?) every night but just leave them in. I think that sometimes changing them out can cause the infection and I also think that not everyone is on the same time table as the “6 weeks” of what ever they suggested.
Some times people find out the hard way they are allergic to a metal they use in the earring.
    Just some thoughts:)
Good luck to your little girl. I also remember that big day I got mine.

Hi Shotgun tries putting peroxide on her ears and than clean it really well with the cleaning solution they gave her and than put Neosporin on it and than put in her earrings. I have had problems in the past and tried this and it works very well. Good luck,

    Hey Shotgun,

My daughter has the same problem. She cant wear anything cheap or not real gold without her ears becoming really red and starting to get infected within 5 to 10 minutes of having them on. SHe is only allowed to wear real gold (the expensive stuff) so she doesnt wear earrings right now. Good luck and if you find something that works let me know I will try it out for my daughter.

Hey Shotgun, like the other gals said - don’t give up! I had the same problem when I was a kid, I kept up with the peroxide and the high quality metals until they were completely healed and it was worth the effort. I’d say keep trying, as long as she is willing to be into it. Good luck!

    Hi Shotgun,

I have had the same problem all my life. Wearing real gold worked for a while but then I developed an allergy to those also. I have a couple suggestions. Try premiere jewelery(this is a direct selling company, I can wear those with little to not allergic reaction, also try getting a coating to put on all her earring posts. You can check with any jewelery store and if they don’t have it you can check with cookie lee(also a direct selling company) I hope that helps.
